Birna is one of the owners of Athygli Conferences. She began working in tourism in 1989, at first as a ranger and assistant to the head ranger in Skaftafell National Park. In 1997 she became project manager at Iceland Travel until she co-founded her own business, Congress Reykjavik, in 2000.

Birna studied sociology at the University of Iceland from 1997-1999 and studied server administration at the TR computer school in 2001 to become more knowledgable in running computer nets for small businesses.
